The two women found dead in a Placerville fire last week were killed by gunshot wounds before the blaze overtook them, county officials say.

Carol Hague, a 62-year-old resident of the home that burned Friday, and 58-year-old Crystal Ann Ward, were identified as the victims killed in the fire.

The Placerville fire, in the 1600 block of Rose Lane, was reported before 6 a.m. Friday. The home was “mostly destroyed” in the fire, El Dorado County officials said.

Officials said Monday that Hague and Ward were shot to death and did not die in the fire, but no other details were released.

The source of the fire and “the manner in which they received those gunshot wounds is still under investigation,” the county said in a press release.
